Hi, guys —

  • Is it OK and are there benefits to doing online adoration or an online Mass?

Eric replied:

Hi, Euranna —

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Yes, of course it's OK. I'm sure Our Lord is pleased when you participate in such activities. Online Mass, however, is no replacement for attending in person and does not fulfill your obligation to attend liturgy on Sundays and holy days. If you are unable to (or some other grave reason exists), you are excused.

Theologically, it's not resolved whether online adoration has the same fruits as in-person adoration. But certainly, it is meritorious.

Mike replied:

Dear Euranna —

As my colleague Eric said, there is no replacement for attending your Sunday obligation or Sunday Mass. Watching an on-line Mass or T.V. Mass would only be allowed if you are seriously sick and cannot get out of the house. You would also want to arrange for an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to visit your home/apartment on a weekly basis until you can make it to church yourself

  • You may ask why?

Because why we attend Sunday Mass "by faith" and "in reality" we enter into that one Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross for our sins and receive the graces that blessed mankind that day on Calvary when Jesus died on the Cross for us. This RE-presentation of that one sacrifice can only happen in one place: at Catholic parishes with a Catholic priest saying the liturgy.

Hope this helps,

Mike
