Hi, guys —
- Would it be inappropriate to gift the church office with something like cupcakes or cookies during Lent?
My fiancé and I are getting married in the church the week after Lent, and I just want to show my appreciation to our parish priests and the ladies in the front office who have been so wonderful these past months. I'm having second thoughts because Lent is a time of abstinence, so something sweet might not be welcome.
Thank you for your guidance, and God bless you.

Mary —
This is a judgment call. There is no Church rule against sweets during Lent, although the chances are probably good that some of the recipients will be abstaining from them of their own volition.
- Why not give them the sweets early, since Lent does not start until next Wednesday?

Mary,
While I don’t disagree with my colleague’s answer, I would suggest something that would help and aid them through the Lenten season. . . "a helper" like a book or penitential guide or something that would have a penitential flavor to it and assist them during the Lenten season (e.g. a Rosary, Scapular, or Way of the Cross pamphlet.)
