Hi, guys —

  • If we ask God to bless a couple does that mean we are asking him to keep the couple together?
  • Also, if someone confessed something to a priest like:
    • they practiced some sort of magic
    • were psychic
    • were mediums
    • had committed a crime like robbing someone, or
    • murdered someone

What would the priest do if he cannot reveal this information to anyone?

Thank you for your time.

Kevin

Eric replied:

Hi, Kevin —

When a priest marries a couple, he is bestowing on them the grace to fulfill the obligations and duties of marriage, including fidelity (staying together).

It doesn't matter what is confessed in Confession, a priest cannot:

  • reveal it, or
  • even do anything about it, or
  • act in any way upon the information.

If the Confessor confessed he had poisoned the communion wine, the priest would be obliged to drink it as if nothing had happened. The priest would just absolve the person if they were truly sorry for their sins.

Eric
