During the Black Death, John Grandison, the Bishop of Exeter, in England, called for processions and prayers to ask God to take away the plague. He wrote that:

"Each of our parishioners, being in a state of grace, who is present at these processions, celebrates Mass or says other devout prayers and performs other placatory offices for these reasons, we mercifully release 30 days penance."

• What does it mean to be released from 30 days penance?
