The Church teaches that the human race had an original pair of first parents. She does not teach when they existed: The Catechism (390) says:

"The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man... the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents."

They lost their harmony with God and their interior and social harmony. Christ restores humanity to harmony with God, and by uniting us to Himself. He restores us to harmony with God and gives us the power to live in harmony with God and others.
