I would just add that there is no reason why Catholics shouldn't strive to imitate Tim's attitude.
Too many Catholics in the pew are afraid or ashamed to mention they are Catholic, though the percentages of Catholics in some cities and towns are very high. The Boston, Massachusetts area has the fourth largest population of Catholic Christians.

My question to them is:

Would you rather be ashamed in this life, or at your particular judgment, which we will all have, from the Popes of the Church and Leaders of the nations, to the poor beggar on the street?

I'm not suggesting you have a "greater than thou" attitude about your faith or judge others but, like Tim, just express it, without shame, when you are drawn by the Spirit.

If you are challenged by questions about your faith, be honest, and if necessary, say you don't know the answer, but will find the answer and get back to them.

The fierce resistance you mention is correct; many of the early Church martyrs and legions of martyrs in the twentieth century received this, but they saw beyond the criticism and fierce resistance to the Heavenly Reward, if they persevered.
