Hi, Andrew —
The short answer to your question
is, Yes. The Ten Commandments
are the primary precepts of the natural
law, which apply to everyone, by
virtue of being human.
There are three motives for following
the Ten Commandments and the teachings
of the Church, as there are
for doing anything:
a. It's good for me
b. It's beneficial for others,
and
c. It pleases God
And conversely, for not doing something:
a. It's bad for me
b. It harms others, and
c. It's offensive to God
All three motives are simultaneously
true; but the atheist would probably
choose one or both of the
first two motives listed.
Regardless of whatever brand of paganism
you subscribe to, it would benefit
you to follow the Commandments. In
addition, you have an obligation
to:
- yourself
- your family
- friends, and
- co-workers
to follow them.
Because they
correspond to our human nature,
those who follow the Ten Commandments,
will be happier and prosper, while
those who don't, will be frustrated.
