Hello, Michael —

Its been a few months since I last e-mailed you.

I'm curious about NDE's (Near Death Experiences) and what the Church has to say, if anything,
about this topic. I've read quite a bit about this on a Catholic web site called Spirit Daily maintained by a man named [name hidden]. The site is like a newspaper reporting on Catholic news from around the world. There is a lot of focus on visionaries, particularly of Our Blessed Mother Mary.

He features many articles and stories from books dealing with NDE's and has written a few books on the afterlife that are quite fascinating.

My question is whether or not the Church has anything to say about these things.

Personally, I think they happen and see no reason why God would not want to give us a tiny glimpse of what's to come.

  • Do you have any thoughts on any of this?

Hi, Barbara —

Nice to hear from you again!

The very end of this posting refers to a recent initiative the Vatican has undertaken in this area.
It includes a video on the topic.

Although I have read stories that confirm what you say about NDE's, the Church has to be cautious and prudent on such events, and keep with Her mandate to teach Jesus' message and evangelize.

That said, I don't believe the Catechism of the Catholic Church has said anything on NDE's but I personally wouldn't doubt that it could happen to specific people for their eternal well-being.

Mike
