Hi, guys —

We know a non-believer who responded to a post when someone wrote, God is Good! she replied,

God is not good! There are starving children in this world. etc, etc, etc.

  • What is a good response I can share with her on the internet in a loving way?

Michelle

  { How do I reply to someone who says: 'God is not good; look at the starving children in this world'? }

Paul replied:

Michelle,

There are starving children in the world because of people's sin, which brings about injustice and suffering in the world. God is not the cause, man is.

  • So why does God allow man to sin and cause injustice for others?

Because he made humans to be persons, like Himself, and persons have free will. They have the ability to do good or evil, choose God or self. Free will is necessary because loving God is necessary; and love, in order for it to be love, must be freely chosen.

Animals, plants, and rocks cannot love because they are not persons and hence not free.
God made us persons to have a personal relationship with us that will transcend this life into Eternity. We must experience and persevere the imbalance and subsequent suffering that occurs in this sin-tainted life to live with God forever when all sin and injustice is wiped away.
(Revelation 21:4)

If:

  • this life was all that was believed, and
  • faith in God's perfect justice having the final word, in the bigger picture for these children as well as for all of us, was absent

then it would be much more difficult to understand the presence of starving children.

Peace,

Paul

Michelle replied:

Paul,

This is very helpful.

Thank you!

Michelle

Paul replied:

You're welcome.

And remember, Jesus is the Perfect Illustration of an Innocent Person being hit with the injustice of the world. He knew His kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36), and that all things work for the good of those who love God. (Romans 8:28)

Peace,

Paul
