Mr. Humphrey,
I am an economist working on marriage and divorce research. I found your web page
online when I was looking for historical data on Catholic populations. I am interested
in finding more data like this. Specifically, I am looking for:
- Catholic population
by state since 1990 (prior would be even better), and
- Catholic population by county
for a similar time period
- Could you tell me the source of the data on your page?
If you have any idea where I
could find historical and county-level data
that would be much appreciated as well.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Mike replied:
Hi Amanda,
The data from the web page below was from Our Sunday Visitor's 2007 Catholic Almanac:
If you needed a Catholic population by state since 1990, you may have to do what I did: use the numbers for each back issue of the Our Sunday Visitor Almanac.
I don't know where else you could get this information for the span of years you are requesting.
(OSV) Our Sunday Visitor is a very reputable organization.

Fr. Nick replied:
Dear Michael:
Amanda can obtain from either the Library or her local parish a book titled: The
Official Catholic Directory, published by D. J. Kennedy and Sons.
This gives the complete data for every diocese in:
- the United States
- Canada, and
- Puerto
Rico.
including:
- Population
- number of Baptisms
- Marriages
- Confirmations
- Funerals
- Annulments,
etc.
It has been published for many years. Back copies may be available:
- in the library,
or
- even online.
