Hi, guys —
- Is it a sin, or sinful, to vocalize, "O My Lord" when expressing astonishment in the same manner as, "O, My Gosh" or "Dag gone"?

Bob replied:
Dear friend,
No, this kind of exclamation is fine; it is almost like a prayer, actually. Older generations would also say things like, "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, have mercy." These kinds of expressions were a way of expressing astonishment or surprise without being irreverent.
When people say "Jesus Christ' with a sudden, somewhat angry or irritated voice, there is no reverence; therefore, it becomes an abuse of the name. It is usually obvious by the person's devotional life: someone who is devout doesn't usually use the name abusively, whereas someone who has no or little relationship with our Lord is likely to be unthinking and even abusive in such speech.
Peace,

Hi, Susie —
Based on my colleague's answer and the current anti-religious culture we have today, I would recommend anyone with this habit, to mention it (or bring it up in) Confession.
