Kelly Jane Ginther wrote:

Hi, guys —

My grandson was born [Date of Birth] with a known congenital heart defect. He is in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), and we are of the Catholic faith, but we are not actively practicing the faith.

Everyone in the family is baptized and wants to approach my daughter about having my grandson baptized now. We can do it again later on, but I think we should do it now.

  • I was wondering if a priest would do this for us?
  • Also, what prayers are there for a sick child?

Please guide us in this time. We need our faith restored.

Thank you for your time.

Kelly Jane
  { Would a priest be willing to baptize my grandson who has a congenital heart defect and is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit? }

Bob replied:

Dear Kelly Jane,

Thanks for the question.

Yes, by all means, have the discussion with your daughter and, considering the circumstances, I'm sure a priest would do it. (Even lay people or atheists can baptize in an emergency, provided they use the proper form and matter and have the intent to baptize).

Here are some  links for prayers that you may find helpful:

We will also pray for your beloved grandchild; I have ownership of my own, who is the delight of my heart, so I know exactly what this means to you. There is nothing harder on Earth than the helplessness of watching a child go through a crisis; I know most of us would trade places in a flash.

God will use this situation for good, and no matter what happens, trust in Him.  In the darkest moments, go to our beloved Mother Mary. She had to flee a madman who wanted to kill her child, so she knows all about the suffering that goes with this loving role in the family. And lastly, pray the Rosary.

There is nothing more powerful, and I am adding this intention to mine tonight.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
