Monica,
Throughout history this was a challenging question (one that leaves fundamentalists speechless), and in earlier times spawned the idea of Limbo, a place between Heaven and Hell for those who did not deserve Hell but lacked the sacramental character (Baptism) required for Heaven.
That idea: Limbo, is no longer considered valid and there is no doctrinal basis for it. It is on the ash heap of theological history.
We entrust those souls to God's Mercy and believe, by His grace, He can apply to them the justification necessary for their salvation, for He wills the salvation of all. (cf. 1 Timothy 4:10)
It is better to trust in the Mercy of God than pure legalism, for He who makes the rules has the authority to circumvent them especially if the soul has, in no way, offended Him or rejected Him.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
