Dale wrote:

Hi, guys —

Both my son and daughter are baptized Catholics. Neither one has received any of the other sacraments.

I have my children only every other weekend. I want to teach my children in my home.
I am a Catholic who has received all my sacraments.

  • Can I be their teacher so that they will be able to receive all their sacraments in the Church?

Please help.

Dale

  { Can I teach my own children the sacraments so they will be able to receive them in the Church? }

Mike replied:

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the question.

No, this realistically can't be done for good reasons.

If all parents, whether married or single parents, wanted to instruct and prepare their children to receive the sacraments of the Church, each instruction would vary based on the religious education level of the parents and how well their Catholic parent(s) had catechized them.

While the Catechism does teach that the spouses, have the primary responsibility for the procreation and education of their children (CCC 2372) when it comes to catechesis She teaches:

CCC 5 Catechesis is an education in the faith of children, young people and adults which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted, generally speaking, in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life. (Catechesi tradendae 18)

In order to ensure a continuity in Catholic teaching, the local Catholic parish has to instruct the children. Nevertheless, you are highly encouraged to get involved and go through what your children are learning.

The person who is ultimately responsible for the correct catechesis in all the Catholic parishes is the local bishop, so if you have any grave concerns, after first addressing them with the pastor, you should go to the bishop.

Hopefully, you will never have to do this.

I hope this helps,

Mike

Fr. Jonathan replied:

I would say, just talk to your pastor.

There are plenty of parishes that have structured home schooling for Religious Ed.

The kids still meet but they get some of the instruction at home.
